Our Mission

Why does the church exist? According to Matthew’s Gospel, the risen Christ made it clear: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you” (28:19-20).

Based on this “Great Commission,” our United Methodist Church has stated its purpose: “The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Local churches provide the most significant arena through which disciple-making occurs.”

Rev. Laurie K. Steele, Pastor

Reverend Laurie K. Steele

is a Provisional Elder in the United Methodist Church and currently serving as the Senior Pastor of both Hartwell and Hartzell United Methodist Churches in Cincinnati, OH.  She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in business, and a Masters of Divinity from United Theological Seminary, with a concentration Church Renewal.  She has 15 years of Children/Youth & Young Adult ministry experience, and in that same time-period has had an extended missional focus on urban/city ministries.  The 8 years prior to stepping into the role of lead pastor Laurie’s expanded her outreach focus to disaster relief in the states, including training with UMCOR in the West Ohio Conference’s Emergency Response Teams which came after mission trips to Biloxi, MS after hurricane Katrina, and then taking this passion for mission further into God’s world with 6 trips to Haiti.  She currently serves on the Ohio River Valley District Board for Buildings & Locations and the new Caribbean Initiative team to help expand our missional reach to those in the Caribbean and beyond.  She is currently working on a number of projects, one that include a focus on fighting the drug epidemic in the Ohio River Valley.  Laurie is married to her partner of 21 years in life and ministry Frank, and together they have 3 amazing children: Courtney, Franklin, and Allison and their two Aussie: Brutus.  Her passion for taking the church outside the walls has become part of her daily ministry focus, but she does make time for date nights with the hubs, lots of Penguins/Blue Jackets hockey, creative Bible journaling, playing her bass and reading.  Oh, and in case you wanted to know where she stands… Well, she definitely leans toward Marvel vs. DC Comics, Star Trek vs. Star Wars, Krispy Kreme vs. Duncan Donuts.

Brandon Fine, Custodian
My name is Brandon Fine. I have been a part of the Hartwell church family all of my life. When I say family, I mean it. Everyone is so close and loving. I do not know what my life would be like without HartweBrandon pic 1ll. I have been blessed to be the church’s custodian for 8 years and counting. I love the quiet time I get when I’m cleaning the sanctuary during the week, and opening the doors for all to worship on Sunday’s.      I look up to people like Mother Theresa and Billy Graham, who have devoted their entire lives to make Jesus happy. I’m always praying for God to lead me where He wants me to go. As custodian, my main focus is to always put God first. I encourage our church every Sunday as I will also encourage you, to put God first in your life above all struggles, worry and fears. Above all desires, wants, and needs. Our Lord is truly great!
